My work examines the physical condition of being female,
of having a womb. It is about pleasure, birth and life. It is about
discomfort, pain and blood. The imagery is drawn from the sexual
nature of woman - wombs, umbilical cords, embryos, blood, skin and
veins. I work intuitively, creating organic forms.
I love to work with my hands, cutting, sewing, pasting, binding,
breaking, wrapping, soaking and plastering. My process is destruction
and repair. I break and mend, over and again. I hurt each piece
so that it can grow. There are many times in life when we experience
pain, but the healing strengthens us. The strength of my work is
the evidence of the process each piece suffers through to arrive
at completion.
It is important to me to address the issues of being female. I strive
to find the power, strength, importance and beauty of womanhood
that grows out of the difficulty, pain and weakness of femininity.
I use feminine materials to create strong female images. Silk, cotton,
paper, and thread have long been
considered less potent materials. Traditionally they have been used
in devalued feminine arts and crafts. I want them to be recognized
for their powerful, seductive nature.
