Romance novels interest me because they are mainly
written by and for women. I find their message of love and sacrifice
at any cost both attractive and disturbing. I can't help enjoying
the glorified language, comical euphemisms, predictable plots and
gaudy covers.
This work began by experimenting with the material: pulping entire
books and reforming them into single sheets, sewing bookends together
into a quilt square, and twisting the books into new shapes.
This culminated in the pieces Harlequin, Ode to Agnes Martin,
and Cairn consist of 50 destroyed and reformed romance
novels. I read each book, and then ripped off its covers and stitched
them together (Harlequin), tore out the preface pages and
sewed them into a grid (Ode to Agnes Martin), and shredded,
pulped, and reformed the remaining pages to imitate rocks (Cairn).
This work brings together many aspects of my process: quilting,
sculpture, papermaking and feminism. I play with the concept of
high and low art, the value and impermanence of women?s work, and
the sincerity, worth, comedy and ubiquitous nature of romance novels.
